The P's of the Job

The time has come for my summer to end - what little summer I do get. I will again rise and shine in the morning and tackle all the tasks my job has to offer. As I do so, I will strive to remember the P's of the principal job -

It's about People, not Policies and Procedures

Truth be told, that's a tough lesson I learned this week through a very unfortunate situation. As a Principal it's easy to get wrapped up in all the must-do's, the laws and the black and white world we exist in. But it's not that easy.

Are you truly being the best administrator you can be if you're ignoring the People in your world and relying solely on Policies and Procedures? I am soberly reminded of my mantra when I entered the world of education...at the ripe old age of 22, I was ready to conquer the world - or at least a room of 1st graders. The classroom is all about relationships. So is the principalship.

So I challenge you as you return to your office to prepare for the upcoming year, you focus on the People....the Policies and Procedures will take care of themselves.
