I've spent much of the past two weeks traveling here in Texas. I attending the TCEA Tots and Technology Conference, TESPA Summer Conference and most recently, the ASCD Building Learning Communities SW Conference. Whew! I'm tired!
After hearing so many wonderful leaders in education speak, I have come to one conclusion: It's time for change.
I'm currently wrestling with how to slowly, yet surely implement this change on my campus for the upcoming year. It's time to take down the walls of our school. It's time to go global.
My first opportunity arrived yesterday as I was editing and revising my Parent Handbook. I found myself working on the Telecommunication/Cell Phone section....and you can guess what happened next. Yep, I'm allowing cell phone use in the upper grades for instructional purposes.
It felt so liberating to type those words in the handbook. Of course, being that we're an elementary school, we will heavily monitor our students as we use such devices.
I'm reminded of why I became an educator in the first place, I wanted to change the world. Well, here I am - one little policy at a time.
We've been traveling the same paths. I'm definitely overwhelmed with the technology information and the possibilities it has for student learning presented at TEPSA and SWBLC.
ReplyDeleteIt's so exciting to hear the impact the conferences you went to had on your thinking as you plan for the new year. Hope more principals are as brave as you to try and create change. Stick with it as you hit bumps in the road.
